Donald Kalsched explores the interior world of dream and fantasy images encountered in therapy with people who have suffered unbearable life experiences. He shows how, in an ironical twist of psychical life, the very images which are generated to defend the self can become malevolent and destructive, resulting in further trauma for the person. Why and how this happens are the questions the book sets out to answer. Drawing on detailed clinical material, the author gives special attention to the problems of addiction and psychosomatic disorder, as well as the broad topic of dissociation and its treatment. By focusing on the archaic and primitive defenses of the self he connects Jungian theory and practice with contemporary object relations theory and dissociation theory. At the same time, he shows how a Jungian understanding of the universal images of myth and folklore can illuminate treatment of the traumatised patient. Trauma is about the rupture of those developmental transitions that make life worth living. Donald Kalsched sees this as a spiritual problem as well as a psychological one and in The Inner World of Trauma he provides a compelling insight into how an inner self-care system tries to save the personal spirit.

I came to this book because of numerous references from other works related to dissociative disorders. I had high expectations. While I credit the author with some very valuable insights into the workings of trauma, and the role of inner realities that emerge from it, I found the book short-sighted and inadequate on two crucial levels. The first is the relative simplicity of how it reads the dynamics of trauma and the creation of alternate, inner realities and persona. The same simple formula of an inner daimon that both protects and forbids is applied to every case. A more thorough exploration would show that the internal splintering often manifests in a wide variety of scenarios and figures. On this note, I would also like to point out that this dynamic not only fails to account for the specifics of some naturally occurring cases of such fragmentation, but is also completely inadequate to address the cases of deliberately engineered DID, and related disorders. In those cases, the agencies that induce the trauma have developed techniques for redirecting the baseline fragmentation in a number of ways that Kalsched's model cannot cope with. The second point is the author's obviously partisan take on Freud's so-called Seduction Theory. Kalsched asserts that Freud never actually denied his initial estimation of prevalent and very real sexual abuse inflicted on his patients. Kalsched claims that he only "modified" it with the addition of the element of fantasy. On paper, so to speak, this may seem to be the case. But, in fact, in actual practice, Freud and almost everyone who followed his views, treated all accounts of sexual abuse as mere fantasy. And, the trauma resulting from it as the product of guilt about the fantasy. As the decades have gone by, the reality of this kind of abuse, inter-familial and otherwise, has been verified. As well, many therapists are now acknowledging the reality of cult abuse, and organized programs from government agencies. What has not been discussed is the possibility that such networks have been in existence for much longer than previously estimated. My point here is that it is entirely possible that many, if not all, of Freud's patients were actually abused in the way they described. And, that some of those persons may have been victims of organized abuse. As well, there is evidence to suggest that Freud himself was sexually abused, and that one of the reasons he more or less (in actual practice, as opposed to theory), jettisoned the idea of real abuse occurring,(or minimized it's importance), was because of his unwillingness to confront his own trauma. To some, these might seem like academic points. But, I believe that any system that claims to treat trauma, but then distorts the reality of how and why it occurs, is already engaged in a massive self-deception. It's insights should not be trusted completely.Overall, I think this work is useful. But, as indicated in my title, crucially flawed.
